Building demand

Already employing some 10,000 workers on the F-35 project, contractor Lockheed Martin could add an additional 2,400 jobs in Texas due to the plane’s popularity.

The additional workers would be used to increase production of the plane by 150 units a year.

The F-35 program is already the most expensive defense program in U.S. history at an estimated $391.2 billion.

The estimates come on the heels of an agreement between the Pentagon and Lockheed for two orders of the F-35s, which are valuated at more than $7 billion.

Seventy-one of those planes would be built at Lockheed’s Fort Worth facility.
